Eyelid Surgery

One of the first and most noticeable features to show the signs of aging are our windows to the world, our eyes.

Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) is designed to help rejuvenate and brighten tired or heavy-appearing eyes by removing drooping upper lids. This procedure also addresses puffiness and “bags” by removing or re-contouring fat or skin around the eyes. Blepharoplasty can be done alone or in conjunction with other facial surgeries such as a facelift or a brow lift.

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia.

The Eyelid Surgery Procedure

For your eyelid surgery, you will likely be given a local anesthetic with sedation, which will improve your comfort and help you to sleep through the surgery.

To begin your surgery, Dr. Samaha will make small, careful incisions hidden in the natural folds of your eyelids. For drooping eyelids, these incisions will be made where they will be minimally visible on the upper eyelid. If you struggle with lower eyelid pockets of fat, Dr. Samaha may make an incision just inside your lower eyelid.

When he has made the appropriate incisions, Dr. Samaha will be able to assess the condition of your eyelids. In the case of loose upper eyelid skin, Dr. Samaha will carefully remove small flaps of loose skin and close the incsions with sutures.

For small areas of fat on the lower lids, Dr. Samaha will use the incision to access the pockets of fat and carefully remove them with a scalpel. He will then close the incisions and apply a surgical bandage.

Eyelid Surgery Aftercare

When you leave Dr. Samaha's practice following your eyelid surgery, you will need a ride home and help around the house for a couple of days. You may experience some discomfort, which may be managed by medication prescribed by Dr. Samaha.

You will need to limit your activity for several days and take care when touching your eye area. If you wear contacts, you can expect to not wear them for a few weeks. As you heal, any swelling will dissipate and you will visit Dr. Samaha for a check up.

When you have completed aftercare from your eyelid surgery in Boston, your eyes should appear younger, with reduced sagging and bags of fat.
