Liposuction
In addition to advanced liposuction technology offered in his Boston practice, plastic surgeon Dr. Fouad Samaha practices traditional liposuction techniques which can help you rid specific areas of your body of fatty deposits that you cannot diminish through diet and exercise.
If You Are Considering Liposuction
If you are looking into liposuction to target fat in specific areas of your body, you might soon count yourself among the millions of Americans who have undergone the procedure—more than 200,000 liposuction procedures were performed in 2010 alone. While it is not an alternative to diet and exercise, liposuction is a method of selective body slimming that can be performed on many areas of the body including:
- Breasts and Chest
- Abdomen
- Back
- Arms and Legs
- Face

As it is not a weight loss alternative, to undergo liposuction you should be at a healthy, stable body weight and be a nonsmoker. It is also key that you have adequate skin elasticity to ensure an ideal aesthetic result following surgery.
What to Expect from Surgery
Depending on the area to be treated and the amount of fat to be removed, your surgery may vary. You will be placed under a general anesthetic for major procedures or a local anesthetic with sedation for more minor procedures. The surgery can last anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, also dependent on your cosmetic goals.
After Dr. Samaha has made small incisions in the treatment area, he will inject a tumescent solution that targets the fatty tissue, making it easier to remove. Using a small tube called a cannula, Dr. Samaha will dislodge and suction out the fat. Once the desired result is achieved, your incisions will be sutured shut and a dressing and surgical tape will be applied.
Liposuction Aftercare
Following your procedure, you may have drainage tubes inserted to collect excess fluid build-up for a day or two. Compression garments, which you will wear for up to three weeks after treatment, will aid in proper healing and contour. Swelling and discomfort are common and pain may be managed with medication.
As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle going forward, fat should not return to the treated area.
