Since early last year Sientra has been providing doctors and patients with a third silicone breast implant option for breast surgeries.

Silicone Gel Breast Implants

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved silicone gel implants for breast augmentation procedures in women at least 22 years of age and for breast reconstruction procedures for women of any age.

Sientra’s silicone gel implants are the third brand name implants to receive the FDA’s  approval for use in the U.S. market. Sientra’s implants received the approval on March of 2012.

Silicone breast implants typically feature either a smooth or textured outer shell that is made of silicone rubber. The textured shell is intended to stay in one place after the procedure, whereas a smooth shell implant is intended to move within breast pocket that is created during the augmentation procedure.

The implants are either round or shaped to provide patients options for various profiles of their breasts once the breast augmentation has been completed. Sientra three kinds of shaped implants: round base, oval base, and a classic base.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

If you have heard the phrase Gummy Bear implants it refers to the cohesive silicone gel inside of a breast implant. While the companies that make cohesive breast implants do not condone the phrase it has become a catchy way to refer to the physical properties of the silicone gel.

The phrase was coined because when the implant is cut in half the implant retains its shape and the gel inside remains stable, just as if you were to do the same to a gummy bear candy.
